- Much has been said about Tony Blair, the Prime Minister's, presidential characteristics.
- He is refered to as "The President of England."
- People say that Mr Blair spends too little time in Parliament, ignores the Cabinet in making desisions which by effect exploits political patronage in his plans to have four-fifths of the House of Lords appointed.
- The people who want change want to make his job much more practical by focusing it on delivering changes to schools and hospitals rather than writing uneccisary memos to ministers.
- To break 100 years of tradition by appointing a non-mandarin to the job would be symbolic by itself but, it would also cause huge controversy among the people.
- The Cabinet Secretary writes the agenda and takes notes at Cabinet meetings, but what makes so powerful is that they can make or break a minister's career with a word in the Prime Minister's ear.
- At a time of international crisis, voters want a leader to be strong and decisive; characteristics that fit a president.
- Why do good leaders have negative characteristics along with positve ones?
- Why are the good leaders letting their negative actions shade their positive ones?

-Sierra Leone officials believe they have evidence that the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and its leader, Foday Sankoh, have traded illicit gems for guns for the war.
-Sankoh also traded illicit gems for heoine and cocaine, which emboldened the child warriors to fight.
-In the summer of 1999, the Lome accord was signed, which was a deal that gave Sankoh a role of government as head of a proposed commission responsible for marketing the country's diamonds.
-Attorney General Solomon Berewa shared details that proved that Sankoh logged over 2,000 diamonds mined by the RUF during the course of his ten months in government.
-These gems were never reported to authorities, therefore making them logged illegally by Sankoh.
-Now all over Africa, rebel groups fight over mining areas so that they can maraud a country's resources and pay for their weapons for the war.
-In 2000, the World Bank reported that the struggle for diamonds had taken over politics as the biggest cause for civil war globally.
Questions:
What recent activity has Fodar Sankoh been up to since 2000?
Is Sankoh still using gems to fund for guns and drugs for his rebel group?

World Health Organization (WHO)
-the WHO has a mandate as well as expertise to coordinate international public health matters
-their goal is to promote the health of all people of the world, and specifically, to combat diseases, especially critical infectious diseases
-WHO is best known for its management of global health issues
-WHO alerts are based more on transmissibility and susceptibility than lethality
-WHO officials declared that the novel influenza outbreak in Mexico (with milder cases initially also reported in the United States) was a "public health emergency of international concern"
-many people believe the WHO's alerts are too narrow and shoule put more emphasis on health and disease awareness alerts
-WHO officials continue to offer recommendations for individuals and communities concerning disease and health management
Does WHO really cover the entire world?
Does WHO look to help those less fortunate?
Does WHO have a specific goal to achieve?

- Are people preparing for 2012?
- Do governments support the 2012 predictions?

What Positive Characteristics Allows a President to Solve Big Problems
http://www.school.eb.com/ebi/article?tocId=9311974
- Robert Kennedy was young, energetic, and tough-minded,who emerged from the shadow of his older brother.
- After establishing himself as a prominent federal attorney, Robert Kennedy served as the United States Attorney General
- After the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963, Robert Kennedy emerged as one of the leading members of the Democratic party's liberal wing until in 1968 he too was assassined during his campaign for the presidency.
- The Kennedy's were a prestigious Irish American family long involved in public service
- Joseph Kennedy, Sr., the son of a prominent Massachusetts politician and a self-made multimillionaire, demanded that his children compete intensely in school and in sports
- Although started out being shy but, Robert Kennedy, like his brothers and sisters, nevertheless inherited his father's commitment to academic excellence and civic-mindedness.
- Robert, perhaps more so than his siblings, also developed the keen competitive instincts that had distinguished his father.
- After the death of his oldest brother, Robert Kennedy withdrew from Harvard and enlisted in the United States Navy.
- In 1951 he accepted a post as an attorney in the United States justice department, but he resigned the following year to serve as the manager of John Kennedy's campaign for a seat in the United States Senate.
- Not yet 30 years old, Robert Kennedy had already established himself as a strong-willed and gifted attorney with a kind attitude and a forceful will.
- Following the assassination of John Kennedy in November of 1963, Robert Kennedy briefly withdrew from public life and feeling ostrasized.
- Why did Robert like his whole family want to continue in the family buisness in politics?
- Once he saw that his brother was assasined did he continue his presidency campagn cause he was determined to change the world or was he plain stupid?

-Some of the best diamonds in the world come from Sierra Leone, but unfortunately most of them are illegally smuggled out of the country.
-About 17 million dollars worth of diamonds leave Sierra Leone each year, but only 11 million is exported by the government.
-Logically speaking, that means that 6 million dollars worth of diamonds are illegally smuggled out of Sierra Leone each year.
-This means that Sierra Leone is losing millions of dollars each year because of rebel smugglers.
-The Sierra Leone government believes that people are smuggling most of their diamonds into Liberia because when you compare exports, Sierra Leone exports only 11 million each year, while Liberia exports close to 100 million each year.
-Both Liberia and Guinea export diamonds each year, but most of them are believed to be smuggled from Sierra Leone.
-Back in 2000, Sierra Leone tried out a new system that was meant to trace a diamond's origin from mind to retailer, but smuggling still continues.
-The Sierra Leone government says that smuggling activity has gotten better, but it still poses a huge problem in Sierra Leone.
Questions
Has the Sierra Leone government tried any other systems to reduce smuggling?
If so, what are they and have they succeeded in any way?
What are some of the ways that people have successfully smuggled diamonds out of Sierra Leone?

immigration blog 2
In this article, I learned...
-the border between Mexico and the US is 1950 miles long.
-In 2000, the census said over 4.8 million immigrants are living in the US thought to be moved illegally.
-Many farmers and factory owners approve of these immigrants because they could pay them so little.
-Immigration has created a "Third Country"
-Immigrants put financial strain on public services.
-Most of the illegal drugs sent in from Mexico come in from Florida.
-In 1986, the Congress passed a law saying that employers who know they are hiring illegal immigrants could be fined and penalized.
-Some immigrants are allowed to stay here sometimes if they pay there fines to stay.
Some questions that this articles rises for me are...
-How much money must the immigrants pay to stay here?
-How many of these illegals have taken Americans' jobs and thus cause us to suffer?
-If they know that lots of drugs come in to Florida from Mexico, why don't they keep a tighter security to keep them form coming in?

Why Won't the US Secure the Borders with Mexico?
-How many illegal immigrants have crossed our border?
-How many US jobs would we have if the immigrants were not employed by US companies?
-Should immigrants that have been living here for over 25 years be given amnesty?
-Would american workers do the same work as the immigrants would do?
So far, I know that most of the immigrants are coming from Mexico. Also, i know that many US citizens have lost jobs because of these illegal immigrants coming over the border from Mexico. I believe that if these immigrants were controlled and not so many of them were here, there would be less job crisis, which makes everyone happy.

Why do people believe in 2012?
Who is predicting it?
Are countries ready/prepared about what their people will do?
2012 or doomsday is predicted to be on Dec. 21st 2012. As I know it was predicted by the Mayans and other sources. I am not sure if any evidence has been found but I know it is scaring people and I want to learn more.
